NH 27/3 Unknown concerto by Handel or contemporary?

This MS gives the impression of having been copied professionally, and the piece of its being a Concerto with several designations of Tutti and Solo. Who is the composer - perhaps Hook, or Avison? There are many Handelian characteristics but some that do not quite ring true – as, for example, the tutti at the end of first movement which is merely a harmony sketched in.

NH 59 'Lady Fergusson'

This is a highly interesting volume mainly from the second decade of the nineteenth century with Kalkbrenner (1785-1849) particularly well represented. At least one item in the volume is for harp – no.9, The March of Emperor Alexander by N.C. Bochsa – suggesting that C(atherine?) Fergusson may have played that instrument. (The 'Lady Fergusson' of the label on the outside of the volume might well have been Catherine, but there is a signature of Jane on item no.2 – the Variations on Rule Brittania, by Kalkbrenner ).

There are other harp parts (as for example no.11 – Twenty Four Scottish Airs by La Motte – which has been printed in such a way that the harp harmonics are made plain) but the fingerings that have been added are for piano, with the use of a cross for the thumb. The March (no.9) does need the other part (for piano) to complete the musical discussion.

There are many virtuosic pieces in this volume but little evidence for the performance of the more difficult items. However with the many well worn page turns and the occasional torn pages, this volume gives the impression of having been well used.

NH 72 'Violino 1mo'

Item 6: On p.9 verso is a pencil drawing of three characters, two older with a youth between holding his hat and looking pathetic with the title 'The Listening wretch'.

Item 8: At the end is another pencil drawing by the same artist of a lady (left) and a gentleman (right) – possibly a musician as he holds a small MS book in his hand. In a speech bubble she appears to be saying: 'Go false damon your seuting is in vain', to which he replies: 'Turn Amaryllis| to thy swain | -Thy damon calls the[e] back again'.

Notes to NH 76:
a. Of the large number of MS listed above some have been written by Catherine Fergusson and might be the result of lessons – running from really incompetent to acceptable as they progress through the volume. Was she perhaps set the task of writing down some traditional Scottish tunes in order to gain technique in handling harmony? Not all are in the same hand (NB items 41-47, in several different hands, have been bound together).
b. item 50 (Kate is Craz'd) is not a very impressive piece of musical work with many awkward rhythms and not much melodic originality.
c. The setting of item 51 (The Flowers of the Forrest) while generally ok is ungrammatical and generally incompetent
d. item '62' (ie 61? - The Sea Nymph) is quite an ambitious song – almost a mini cantata which is much more competent and makes good musical sense though limited in ambition (written on two staves with no figures in the bass part)
e. Though many parts of item 62 (Soft as yon silver ray) are competent there seems to be a displacement of rhythm across the beat in several places
f. Following item 62 (the song 'Soft as yon silver ray'), several pages appear to have been cut out.
g. Generally the volume is of thick, grey paper, with the various items stuck onto the paper.
