The 59 rolls listed as "Set 1" below and intended for playing by "symphony organ" are housed in a cabinet (on six shelves, 9 to a shelf) adjacent to the organ itself at Fyvie Castle. They are a mixture, with some made in UK and others in USA. Whereas we have a date of 1905 for the building of the organ, we do not know precisely when the automatic playing mechanism was put in. Was it when the organ was built, or some time later?
The second set ("Set 2" below) of 47 rolls, likewise on six shelves and numbered 1-54 below to allow for 2 tester rolls, 1 spare receiving roll and 4 empty spaces, came to the National Trust for Scotland more recently (1991?) and is housed in a cabinet at the foot of the stairs below the gallery at Fyvie.
The rolls in the first set are an eclectic collection of musical items, heavily weighted towards opera, with an emphasis on Wagner. (There are extracts from seven of his operas, including Tristan und Isolde, Rienzi, Tannhäuser, Siegfried, Die Walkűre, Lohengrin, and Die Meistersinger.) Other operas represented are by Weber, and French composers Auber, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Flotow and Dubois.
There are excerpts from religious works, including Messiah by Handel (He shall feed his flock), and the ubiquitous Twelfth Mass by Mozart (nowadays more usually ascribed to Wenzel Müller; a movement from Rossini’s Stabat Mater (Cuius animam); Gounod's Sanctus from his St. Cecila’s Mass; and Ora pro nobis by Piccolomini (a pseudonym of H. T. Pontet).
There are also symphonic movements and overtures by Mozart (The Magic Flute); Handel (Largo); Beethoven (Pastoral Symphony); Schubert (Overture to Rosamunde); Mendelssohn (Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream); Tchaikovsky (slow movement of the 6th Symphony, the Pathétique); a Hungarian Dance by Dvorák; and two pieces of Grieg (Anitra’s Dance and the Hall of the Mountain King) both from the music for Peer Gynt. There are also works by composers lesser-known today such as Guilmant, the French organist, and the English-born but American-domiciled composer Edwin Lemare.
There are songs by Schubert (Who is Sylvia?), with Ave Maria by Gounod and The Lost Chord by Sullivan each on two rolls – one without accompaniment so that a voice could sing with the roll. There are some piano pieces, or arrangements for piano, such as that symbol of Hungarian national identity, the Racoczky March, arranged by Liszt, or the Fantasie Brillante from Gounod’s Faust by Sydney Smith, as well as hymns and songs. But perhaps the most startling is the roll which includes the first three movements of the Mass in b minor by the great German Baroque composer J. S. Bach – a work not known until its revival by the Bach Choir in London in 1876. This is the only work of the baroque era and it does not seem to fit with the character of the other works represented here.
The second set of rolls comes from a later period and shows an emphasis on music for the theatre (including some excerpts from Lehar) from shows which were popular in the period following the First World War. Though there are examples from Beethoven, a Haydn symphony, and extracts from Wagner, there is more French and Italian opera, with works by Messager, Offenbach, Verdi and Puccini. Quite a number of piano works are included, with several works by Chopin and the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg. There are works by Brahms and Dvorak, and several compositions from Samuel Coleridge-Taylor give breadth to the repertoire. There are also songs and pieces of a popular caste including a march by Philip Sousa, and several songs from musicals of the early decades of the twentieth century.
